Exhibition Introduction

The Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw had once said "no conflict, no drama". Life is like a drama.  Each day of our life is similar to every word and every phrase spoken on stage in a performance. It is perhaps too greedy expecting life to be smooth and perfect. Misfortune, no matter how minor, is inevitable which can enhance our experience and enrich our life.

Three categories of artwork were on display including painting, pottery and the creative use of old clothes. The artists are between 80 to 100 years old who have expressed their wisdom and intelligence in art. As the visitors look, touch and wander through the exhibition, they will be fascinated by the elderly who have happily started another chapter in life.

Collection l - Painting (Walking Down a Small Path)

On selected paintings:

  • Back Garden at Home
  • Rose Garden
  • Eternity

"You and l" are holding hands as we walk together. It is a man's journey through life. The paintings are a record of memories and fantasies for where we were born. There are images reflecting our hard work in caring for the well being of our family. Also the unspoken satisfaction as we enjoy the fruits of success. At the end we all look forward to a peaceful resting place in heaven.

Collection ll - Pottery in Clay (Abundance)

Making pottery by hand involves touching, feeling and pinching the clay to create special shapes and forms. It is an interactive process which is often filled with many memorable moments until the "final product" is formed.

True beauty is a synthesis of our hands and our soul. Our thoughts are infused into and forever merged with the creation.

A piece of pottery may be un-smooth or uneven. Yet these are not imperfections. The elderly are expressing personal freedom and emotion through irregularities which are intentionally portrayed in the completed work.

Clay is a special material which is elastic and can easily be transformed. Despite physical limitations induced by ageing, pottery making is providing an "artistic cradle" for the elderly to be fully engaged in creating personalised artwork to suit individual characters.

Collection lll - Knitting (Door)

The main components of each artwork are long thin strips of fabric cut out from old clothes. The strips are braided and fixed by hands through knots (so-called net knitting method) to form wall hangings. Each hanging may serve as a window, a door, or a "see through" network to make new connections.

The old clothes were collected from elderly living in Kwong Yum Care Home, staff of the Care Home and donations by the Kwun Tong community. The elderly then selected from their pants and favourite blouses in small floral patterns, which were mixed with contemporary fashion, shirts and dresses of office workers and sportswear for children.

The story of all those who have contributed were already incorporated into the old clothes, and that was "the past". In making the new work, the elderly have united people of all ages, backgrounds and sectors. Every hanging when completed is celebrating the birth of another phase in life, and that is "the future".

The elderly have expressed their style, imagination, vision and story in their artwork while also uniting the community. From an artistic point of view, the community through their involvement can easily connect with and respect the elderly as the undeniable treasure who will always continue to inspire.
